Even with an engine nearly three times the size, twice the cylinders and twice the camshafts...
...t he Vette STILL has a significantly lower cowl than the plucky MX-5.
The C4 almost made the Miata look a bit chubby.
An eclectic group was here that day.
Tomorrow will be my first day off in 12 days. Lots of late nights lately, but I have to admit, after a long day of work, walking out to leave at midnight and seeing this waiting for me means the fun is just about to begin...

You can thank modern pedestrian crash safety standards for that

So true, so true.... The wedge is dead.

That C4 is clean. Its front end is nearly as swoopy as your ND too.
Perhaps part of the low hood is the fact that it uses a pushrod V8, which lets the engine have a lower cam cover profile, and then the two banks are slanted too.
The MX-5's engine sits upright, with tall DOHC cams in the head, and that’s before we get to pedestrian impact regulations raising hood lines across the board for front engine cars
.

So where does that leave the Monte Carlo? Even chubbier looking than usual.

Take the long way home.

FWIW, my C5's is still lower than an NB.

What is the effect on that first picture? Is that tilt shift?

I also liked it when cars had windows that you could look out of when you were riding down the road. And when tires had actual side walls.

Yes, total chubs. But weirdly it’s only about 100lbs heavier than the HHR SS in the back.
And the 500 and the Mazda are a 1000lbs lighter than both
The Vette is actually the heaviest one with the big LT5 and ZF trans, yet looks the slimmest.

Outward visibility is a hugely undervalued asset in car design. My E30 BMW had the best visibility of any car I ever owned, even better than an NC or ND Miata believe it or not. The rear decklid was so low that you could see the ground like 6 feet off the rear bumper of the car.

Fascinating. I would have thought the Monte Carlo had a few pounds on it.

It’s one of the “lenses” in the P hotoshop Camera app. It’s called portrait I think.

Edit: just looked at the pics again, it is indeed a ZR1!!
